This month's Daisy Award winner exemplifies what it means to be a DCH caregiver. Congratulations to Jai Blackmon from the Northport Medical Center Emergency Department!
The nomination was written by a patient:
Mr. Blackmon is deserving of such a nomination and I may so easily describe the reasons he is with principles of the facility in which I am employed.
1.) Integrity—in the way that he interacted with other clinicians; I was most appreciative I did not hear him speaking of other patients in ear range or with any disparaging comments;
2.) Commitment—Mr. Blackmon carried out his tasks, kept me updated about recommendations, answered questions, and gave warm communication handoff to the clinician/physician who may be able answer my question;
3.) Advocacy—each need or concern I voiced was NOT overlooked (this is priceless in healthcare). Patients need to know that they are heard and their concerns not disregarded. They are the experts on what is going on in their body. I was heard. Thank you, sir, for listening;
4.) Respect—several things I have mentioned are examples of the respect shown to me… even with “simple “gestures such as grabbing another gown and placing it on as I was awkwardly trying to ensure my gown was completely closed in order get to a restroom down the hallway. It also spoke volumes of how respectful he was of his peers. He warmly introduced them, thanked them for their assistance—all staff (from RNs, Techs, Environmental service staff, Lab, Physicians). This level of respect makes for a great work environment that is passed along to your patients;
5.) Excellence—Mr. Blackmon embodied excellence in how he carried about his task. The moments my door was open I could hear and see him stroll the hallways checking in on patients and staff alike. Checking on needs before someone has to seek and ask is not only excellent, but smart (not to mention makes people feel cared for). I have had a rough week health-wise, and am grateful that he was a primary part of my care team on this ED visit.
Thank you, Jai, for representing the very best of DCH and nursing!
