The Hillcrest Lady Patriots Softball team will host the Patriot Classic, a large two-day tournament with over 50 teams, on February 28 and 29, to raise awareness and funds for the DCH Breast Cancer Fund. This year marks the 15th annual Patriot Classic, and the team hopes to break their goal to donate $100,000 for the fund over the several years they have held this tournament.
“The Foundation greatly appreciates the work of our third-party events and the hosts. The Hillcrest softball team has been very generous towards a great fund, and we could not have helped as many women without their donations over the past 15 years,” said Molly Ingram, DCH Health System Vice President of Development.
The DCH Breast Cancer Fund, created in 2004, helps uninsured women in the West Alabama community with mammograms, additional testing if needed, and personal items, such as wigs and prostheses, breast ultrasounds, and can participate in the Behind the Ribbon program, in which they are paired with a survivor mentor to help them through the treatment process. The Hillcrest Lady Patriots Softball team’s donations help these women in a very difficult time of need, and many of them personally know someone affected by cancer and feel that the cause is well worth the donations and enjoy giving to the fund.
At the Patriot Classic kickoff dinner, hosted in the DCH cafeteria, the girls eat dinner as speakers explain how donations make a difference. The team tours the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center and gets to see the rooms their past donations have provided. Over the past several years, the Hillcrest Lady Patriots Softball team has raised approximately $88,000 to benefit the DCH Breast Cancer Fund and will continue to make a difference with their next tournament.
