Manderson Cancer Center Offering Free Clinical Breast Screenings in October

9/27/2017

The Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center at DCH Regional Medical Center will host free breast screenings for women who have little or no health insurance during October.

Screenings will be held Monday, Oct. 9, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center at DCH Regional Medical Center and Monday, Oct. 16, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Manderson Cancer Center for the Latina American Community (exclusivo para la comunidad Latina).

Qualified women will receive education about how to do a breast self-examination, a clinical breast exam from a health care professional and a voucher for a free digital mammogram at the new Breast Center at DCH Regional Medical Center or at Northport Medical Center.

The screening is for women with little or no insurance who are age 40 or over, who have no personal history of breast cancer and who have not had a mammogram for at least 12 months. Monthly breast self-examinations, annual physical examinations and annual mammograms for women over 40 years of age are the “gold standard” for the early detection of breast cancer.

“Breast cancer can be successfully treated – if it’s found early,” said Dr. Curtis Tucker medical director of radiation oncology at the Manderson Cancer Center. “Unfortunately, many women in this community do not have adequate health insurance and, therefore, do not have access to these basic health services.”

Reservations are required, and can be made by calling (205) 759-7833.
Leave your name and number, and you will be contacted to schedule an appointment time.

Funding for the screenings is provided by The DCH Foundation, The DCH Breast Cancer Fund and the Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program of Alabama.
