Establishing an intravenous line to provide fluids, nutrition or medication is critically important for almost every baby admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. It is also technically challenging since these are the tiniest of patients.

Thanks to a grant awarded through Brave Beginnings, the NICU at Northport Medical Center has purchased a portable ultrasound machine to assist with this technical challenge.

The FujiFilm SonoSite II portable ultrasound machine can help NICU nurses successfully place an IV in preemies, avoiding complications associated with multiple needle sticks.

“This advanced technology can lead to improved outcomes for babies in our NICU unit,” said Carla Kapera, NICU nurse manager. “The addition of this ultrasound unit allows us to create a new standard of care. It will help keep our tiniest patients comfortable and cozy until it is time to go home to their families.”

In addition to the purchase of the portable ultrasound machine through the Brave Beginnings grant, another unit was purchased for the NICU at DCH Regional Medical Center. It was bought through community funds donated to the Finn & Quinley Infant & Children’s Fund.

“The DCH Health System and DCH Foundation are grateful to Brave Beginnings and our community donors who help us make a difference in the care provided to our patients,” said Molly Ingram, vice president of development.
