Frequently Asked Primary Care Questions

What is the difference between family medicine and internal medicine?

Family medicine providers care for patients of all ages, while internal medicine providers typically focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult health conditions.

Why is it important to have a primary care provider?

Having a primary care provider can help improve health outcomes through preventive care, early detection of disease, management of chronic conditions, and coordinated healthcare services.

Can primary care providers order lab tests and imaging?

Yes. Primary care providers can order diagnostic services such as blood work, urine testing, X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and other imaging studies when medically appropriate.

What happens during an annual wellness visit?

During an annual wellness visit, your provider may review your medical history, discuss your health concerns, assess risk factors, recommend screenings, and develop a plan to support your overall health.

When should I see a primary care provider instead of urgent care?

Your primary care provider is the best place to go for routine check-ups, preventive care, ongoing management of chronic conditions, and non-emergency health concerns. Because your provider knows your health history, they can offer more personalized care and help coordinate any specialty services you may need.

Urgent care may be appropriate for minor illnesses or injuries that need prompt attention when your primary care provider is unavailable. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

How often should I schedule a wellness visit?

Most adults should schedule a wellness visit or annual physical once a year, even if they feel healthy. Regular wellness visits allow your provider to monitor your overall health, recommend preventive screenings, review medications, discuss lifestyle habits, and identify potential health concerns early.

Depending on your age, medical history, and existing health conditions, your provider may recommend more frequent visits to help you stay on track with your health goals.
